Easyfix Clipglaze Flexible Secondary Glazing
Easyfix Clipglaze is a flexible secondary glazing edging system, designed for easy installation and long-term use, providing heat and noise insulation for over 60 years. It uses a flexible edging strip and nylon turn button clips screwed into place to secure panels to the window itself or the surround. The base of the clip is around 10mm wide and they rotate around the screw fixing to hold the panes in place or release them, allowing for easy removal and reuse. Clips need to be ordered to match sheet thickness as the height of the base accounts for the additional thickness of edging, eg 4mm clips for 4mm sheets.
Clipglaze edging is made for 2mm, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm and 6mm sheet or glass thickness, available in White, Clear or Brown and can be purchased in component form, or (excluding 5mm) in pre pack kits of 15m or 5m that include sufficient clips and screws. Sa a result you have everything you need to fit a cost effective seondary glazing system.
Clipglaze secondary panes can be fitted to the opening window light or to the main frame for maximum insulation and draught proofing. The screw down fixing means that the Clipglaze system can also be fitted externally and is suitable for glass, skylights/overhead windows, or opening windows/doors, therefore providing a safe, secure glazing option of opening doors and windows.
Clipglaze is suitable for edging and insulating radiuses on windows and glass due to its flexibility. As a result, it’s possible to secondary glaze arched and round windows where there is space for the clips to be attached. The spine of the channel fits onto the sheet edge and where the legs of it flare out because of the curve, small pieces can be carefully cut out to give a smooth finish.
Each 15m kit has 72 clips and screws, the 5m “starter kits” have 24 clips and screws, and both sizes of kit contain a mitre gauge. The brown kits contain brown clips, while the clear and white kits both use milky white “natural” coloured clips.
The component parts available are below;
- Edging strip in 30m or 150m coils.
- Clipglaze bulk fixings (150 each clips and screws with 5 mitre gauges), roughly one pack per 30m required.
- Clips and screws available in packs of 12.
- Single Mitre Gauges.
- Decide on the flat area of frame/window that you want to fix the Clipglaze onto.
- Where possible allow the secondary pane to overlap the frame by 10mm on all sides, ensuring at least 20mm mounting space on all sides to account for the clip bases.
Tools required to fit are a tape measure, pen, craft knife or similar and screwdriver.
- Place a mark on the edging strip 5cm from a neat squarely cut end.
- Lay the edging strip in the channel of the Easyfix® mitre gauge so the mark on the edging strip is in the centre of the middle “V”. Holding the strip firmly in the two finger grips, cut down each side of the “V” with the sharp knife, being careful not to cut right through the strip.
- Now carefully fit the edging strip on the sheet, the cut out should mould easily around the first corner. Continue pushing the edging on along to the next corner and mark with the pen on the edging strip where the sheet finishes. This point marks the position of the next corner.
- Repeat steps 2 and 3 until the edging strip is fitted around the entire sheet.
- Position the sheet carefully so there is an equal overlap on the frame on all four sides.
- You will need a clip about 5cm from each corner on each side, then clips spaced equally about 20-25cm along the remaining distance.
- Fix the two clips on the bottom edge 5cm from the corners – these will hold the weight of the sheet.
- Make sure the sheet is clean and the window is dry before resting the sheet on the bottom fixing clips. Fix two clips on the top edge, making sure that one of these first four clips covers the join in the edging strip.
- Now complete the window by fixing the rest of the clips as suggested above.
Helpful Hint – The edging strip is always easier to fit when warm and always press into place a bit at a time rather than running a finger along the spine.
- Privacy Frost; A frosted film that can be fitted to original or secondary panes to allow light through the window but retaining privacy from the outside world.
- Antistatic Spray can be used to diffuse the static charge on the sheet when the film have been removed to help prevent the attraction of dust and particles from the air.
- Microfibre cloths can be used to clean the sheets without scratching the glazing panels.
